Wickersley Youth U12 trip to Holland
“Wickersley Youth U12 have just returned from Amsterdam after a very successful weekend.
The team which plays in the Sheffield & District Junior League U12A division, managed by Len Curtis & Andy Yates played two games against high quality teams from the Amsterdam A league. The first game ended in a 2-2 draw v VVOG after two stunning strikes from Alex Bonnington. The facilities were incredible and the boys did the club and the Sheffield & District Junior League proud with their excellent performance and behaviour.
We played FC Lelystad A side in the second game which is one of the top junior clubs in Holland. Wickersley raced into a 3 goal lead with some stunning football but were pegged back to 3-3 . A hat-trick from Alex Bonnington and a goal from Mitchell Clogg ensured a 4-3 win after Lelystad missed a penalty in the last second after a controversial dive from a Dutch player.
Lelystad were so impressed with the quality of football and behaviour of the Rotherham lads that they now want to bring 6 teams to Rotherham next summer!
The group of 35 including parents and grandparents who stayed in the beautiful De Emhof Center Parcs and the facilities were fantastic.
What was unique about the trip was that every single player went free of charge due to the £5000 we raised through fundraising and sponsorships. Special thank goes to Jane Curtis who organised the whole trip and co-ordinated the fundraising.
We would like to personally thank our sponsors, Wickersley Cantonese, Alan Smith Physiotherapy, CJ Carley Painting, CM Property Developers, Assist 24 hour Nursing, Pukka Pies, Total Wellbeing, Darren Wright Painting, Leger Travel, Parkins Accountants and the Bramley and Wickersley Lions for all their support in making the trip possible.”
