Meet the Coach!
October is Black History Month and to celebrate we would like to showcase one of our Coach Mentors who currently works at Football Unites Racism Divides (FURD):
Name: Vill Powell
Coaching Qualifications:
1st4Sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Football;
UEFA B Licence;

FA Youth Award Module 1 - Developing the Environment
FA Youth Award Module 2 - Developing the Practice.
Currently also completing The FA Youth Award Module 3 -Developing The player (complete Nov 2015) and UEFA A Licence Part 1 (UEFA A Licence Part 2 due for completion Feb 2016).
Brief overview of your coaching history and how you got started:
I never really thought about coaching after playing it was something I kind of fell into while still playing 6/7 years ago. I was approached by Howard Holmes one of the Founders of Football Unites Racism Divides (F.U.R.D) to take over an adult amateur football team that was part of the FURD organisation Sharrow United, a team of Black and Ethnic Minority footballers that had been stereotyped to an extent within the Sunday football world but had a lot of talent passion and commitment.
I managed the side with a lot of on and off the field success gaining promotion and changing perceptions of the team and even gaining sponsorship for the team.
Through FURD’s support and in particular the support of Howard Holmes I gained my level 2 and UEFA B coaching qualifications and moved into a coaching role at Rotherham United Academy.
Can you tell us about the team that you coach:
I currently coach two male teams at different ages teams, I coach the Under 15’s at Rotherham United Academy where the main focus is to coach and develop talent that can then hopefully go on to have a career in the game if not at Rotherham, somewhere else.
I also coach at Harrogate Town an open age adult team who play in the Vanarama Conference North where my role is to assist with coaching the first team and player recruitment. We currently sit 3rd in the Vanarama Conference North doing pretty well and looking to progress into the National League.
Your role at FURD and how you impact grassroots football:
My role with FURD is to assist the next batch of coaches with their coaching pathway and open doors and give them access to opportunities within the game through my contacts and connections within the game.
Coaching tip or any advice you have for other coaches:
The best advice I can give to other coaches is decide at which level you want to coach at, look at the qualifications needed to coach at that level, then follow the coaching pathway and gain the relevant qualifications while at the same time looking to gain experience through volunteering etc.
And although the coaching pathway is not cheap look at it like this if you want to be a specialist in any industry you need to gain the qualifications, the role of the Coach is to teach and educate.
Getting teaching qualifications is a costly process. But you’ll be getting what’s regarded as the best level of coaching qualifications in the world at a time when England needs better coaches more than ever.
FA WSL Continental Tyres Cup Final
On 1st November The FA WSL Continental Tyres Cup Final will be played at AESSEAL New York Stadium in Rotherham. "The competition so far has been incredibly exciting and will only get better as we get closer to The Final. There are 12,000 seats at the stadium and it would be fantastic to see those filled by fans that supported the Lionesses so passionately whilst they were in Canada."
We would love to see as many local clubs at the final as possible and details of ticket offers to our Charter Standard clubs will be announced on www.sheffieldfa.com in the run up to the event! It’s set to be a great day so please show your support if you can!

Grassroots survey gains momentum
The FA has launched the most comprehensive survey of grassroots football it has ever undertaken.
Contributions are being sought from players, coaches, referees as well as the staff and volunteers that form the 400,000-strong grassroots football workforce.
FA Chief Executive Martin Glenn said: "We are on the cusp of a real revolution within grassroots football and, as we move forward, it is vital we ensure that we are listening to those that it impacts upon directly.”
